Brahmapur, earlier known as Berhampur in British India, lying in the eastern coastline of Ganjam District of the East Indian state of Orissa, is renowned for its silk, temples and culture. Known as the ‘The Silk City’, Brahmapur also got nicknamed as the ‘The Dance City’ after the Prince Dance Group and Harihar Das received acclaims for performances in a television series – India's Got Talent.


Facts and Figures:

One of the oldest and largest city in Orissa, Brahmapur offers a trade centre for the nearby small towns and villages. Most of the residents here are self-employed and engaged in different businesses. The destination is famous for its intricately designed silk sarees known as Berhampuri patta, for handloom cloth and also for jeweler shops.



Brahmapur is situated about 160 km (99 miles) south of the state capital Bhubaneswar, and is well-connected with Air, Rail and Road transport. The city has the historic Berhampur Airport (Rangeilunda) lying about 5 km from the city. The city has its own railway station connecting it to all the major cities. The city is connected with National Highways NH-5 (Chennai – Kolkata) and NH-217 (Gopalpur – Raipur) and all the major cities towns of the state.


Place to Visit:

There are lots of places to visit at Brahmapur, especially its beaches and temples. Gopalpur Beach, Dhabaleshwar Beach, Aryapalli Beach, Sonepur Beach, Chatrapur Port Area and Chilika Lake are some of the main tourists attractions here and nearby areas. The famous temples here are Taratarini Temple – The Shakti Pitha, Sri Sri Sri Sidhibinayakya Pitha, Siddha Bhairavi Temple, Bala Kumari Temple and Biranchi Narayan Sun Temple. Other major places to visit here are Potagarh Fort built by British and City Market Area, among others.



You can enjoy here the Bi-Annual Thakurani Yatra – The Festival of the Goddess Budhi Thakurani and Kalua Jatra among others. Or just spend some quality time at beaches or nearby forest areas of Brahmapur.
