Chilka:

Chilka Lake (Chilika Lake), a brackish water lagoon, expanding over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam Districts in the East Indian state of Orissa, at the River Daya’s mouth. The shores of the lake are the nice picnic spot for the visitors. The lagoon is connected to the Bay of Bengal with a 32 km long narrow outer channel, close to the village Motto. CDA recently opened a new mouth of the lagoon, offering it new reasons to attract visitors.

 

Facts and Figures:

The lagoon flows into the Bay of Bengal, spreading over an area of over 1,100 sq km. India’s largest coastal lagoon and the world’s second largest lagoon houses a host of species of flora and fauna. Migratory birds find hare the largest wintering ground on the Indian sub-continent. Its wide fishery resources make the lake an ecosystem. A total of 132 villages on the shore and islands houses over 150,000 fisher-folk.
